Under this bill, a person who is 18 years of age or older and temporarily residing out of state to attend a secondary, post-secondary, vocational, graduate or professional education program outside of New Jersey, may be excused from jury service. The student shall provide acceptable forms of proof that the student is temporarily residing outside of New Jersey to attend the out-of-state educational program. The New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts shall oversee the requirements for acceptable forms of proof of out-of-state residency.

AI Summary

This bill amends existing New Jersey law to create a new reason for being excused from jury service: being a student temporarily living outside of the state for an out-of-state education program. Specifically, individuals aged 18 or older who are temporarily residing outside of New Jersey to attend a secondary, post-secondary, vocational, graduate, or professional education program can now be excused from jury duty. To qualify for this excuse, the student must provide acceptable proof, as determined by the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts, that they are indeed living out of state for their education. This provision adds to the existing list of reasons for jury duty excuses, which include being over 75 years old, having served on a jury recently, or facing severe hardship due to medical issues, financial difficulties, caregiving responsibilities, or specific professional roles like certain healthcare workers or teachers.
