This bill establishes a process for handling traffic violations committed by autonomous vehicles, which are defined as vehicles operated by an "automated driving system" (ADS). If a law enforcement officer determines an ADS has committed a traffic offense, a notice of violation or citation will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. This notice must be sent within twenty business days, include a Tennessee return address, and allow thirty days for payment. Additional penalties for non-payment will only be assessed after a second notice is sent, providing another thirty days for payment. The notice will clearly state the fine amount and any additional fees or court costs. The registered owner can choose to pay the fine without appearing in court, but failure to pay within the specified timeframes may result in additional fees or court costs, especially if the violation is contested and the ADS is found to have committed the offense.
