If a law enforcement officer determines an autonomous vehicle has broken a traffic law, a notice of violation or citation will be mailed to the vehicle's registered owner. This notice must be sent within 20 business days, unless there are registration issues, and must include a Tennessee return address for responses and payments. The owner will have 30 days to pay the fine, and no additional penalties will be added unless a second notice is sent and payment is still not made within another 30 days. The notice will clearly state the fine amount and any potential additional fees or court costs. The registered owner can choose to pay the fine without contesting it or can contest the charge in court. Additional fees or court costs may be assessed if the citation is not paid on time or if the vehicle is found to have committed the offense after a court appearance.
