This bill aims to enhance mathematics education for Tennessee students by allowing educators licensed to teach eighth-grade math to also teach Algebra I or equivalent courses at no extra cost, and by requiring the state's academic standards committee to include advanced math standards for grades five through seven. Beginning in the 2027-2028 school year, students who score "exceeds expectations" on their seventh-grade TCAP math test will be automatically enrolled in Algebra I or an equivalent course in eighth grade, unless their parents opt them out within 30 days of the school year's start; successful completion of this eighth-grade Algebra I course will also satisfy any high school Algebra I graduation requirements. Furthermore, the bill mandates that high school course grades achieved by students in eighth grade be included in their uniform grading system and that these grades be considered for students enrolled in eighth grade.
