This bill mandates that local education agencies (LEAs), which are public school districts, and public charter schools in Tennessee must incorporate a state-approved civics instructional video into their social studies curriculum for students in grades six through eight and grades nine through twelve, starting with the 2027-2028 school year. The state board of education will approve these videos by July 1, 2027, based on recommendations from a commission, ensuring the videos are historically accurate, free of political advocacy, and include specific information about the Declaration of Independence, including the preamble and the meaning of a key quote about unalienable rights, as well as the religious affiliations and moral beliefs of the founding fathers involved with the Articles of Confederation and the Constitutional Convention. These videos are considered supplemental instructional materials, meaning their use does not prohibit or apply to other supplementary teaching resources.
