This bill allows certain school employees, who have completed specific training and are designated by a principal, to conduct physical searches of students and searches of vehicles, containers, packages, lockers, or other storage areas used by students or visitors in specific situations, and it modifies the requirements for when a Local Education Agency (LEA), which is a school district, must notify parents and guardians about threats of violence or disruptive behavior. Previously, LEAs had to notify parents about all reported threats, but now they are only required to do so if the LEA determines the threat to be credible after a threat assessment, and this notification must occur within 48 hours of that credibility determination. The bill also clarifies that reporting a threat to a school resource officer or an armed school security officer does not automatically count as reporting to law enforcement for the purpose of triggering parental notification.
