This bill establishes a voluntary "climate literacy seal" for graduating high school students in Minnesota to recognize their understanding of climate science and their development of "green skills," which are abilities needed to live in and support a sustainable society, and "technical green skills," which are specific skills for jobs that reduce environmental harm. To earn this seal, students must meet standard graduation requirements, complete at least two approved courses related to climate literacy, and successfully finish a final experiential learning project focused on local climate change impacts, which could involve community projects, internships, or research. Participating schools, which can be school districts, charter schools, or cooperative units, must decide annually if they will offer the seal and inform students and guardians about the requirements, listing approved courses and allowing external providers like local businesses or nonprofits to help students with their projects. These schools will then collect data on seal recipients and their projects, submitting an annual report to the commissioner of education, who will in turn report to the legislature on the program's participation and outcomes.
