This bill allows eggs that have passed their "quality assurance date," which is defined as any date after which a manufacturer or processor reasonably believes a product might lose its quality due to spoilage or other natural reasons, to be donated to charitable food assistance programs. Previously, eggs past certain dates were required to be removed from sale, but this legislation creates an exception for donations under specific conditions: the eggs must be in their original packaging, have already been candled and graded, kept continuously refrigerated, distributed to consumers within 30 days of their original quality assurance date, and their packaging must be labeled with the name of the charitable program, a "distribute by" date no more than 30 days past the original quality assurance date, and a statement indicating they are donated and not for resale.
