This bill allows eggs that have passed their "quality assurance date," which is defined as any date after which a product might lose its palatability or desirable properties due to natural reasons like spoilage, to be donated to charitable food assistance programs. Previously, eggs past certain dates were required to be removed from sale, but this legislation creates an exception for donated eggs, provided they are in their original packaging, have been previously candled and graded, are kept continuously refrigerated, are distributed to consumers within 30 days of their original quality assurance date, and their packaging is clearly labeled with the name of the distributing program, a "distribute by" date, and a statement indicating they are donated and not for resale.
