Bill Summary

AN ACT to amend the retirement and social security law, in relation to the treatment of prior service with certain agencies by the New York city police pension fund

AI Summary

This bill, known as the "Didarul Islam police recruitment act," amends the retirement and social security law to allow members of the New York City Police Pension Fund to receive credit for prior service in certain agencies, including as a New York City school safety agent or supervisor, a New York City corrections officer or supervisor, a New York City traffic enforcement agent or supervisor, or in the police cadet program. This prior service, if it immediately precedes service in the uniformed force of the New York City Police Department, will be considered service in the uniformed force for the purpose of determining eligibility for and the amount of benefits from the pension fund, provided the member pays or transfers all required contributions plus 5% annual interest into the fund. The bill also specifies that if contributions are transferred from the New York City Employees' Retirement System (NYCERS), membership in NYCERS will cease, and no credit will be retained there.
