This bill authorizes the Commissioner of Health to award grants for peer-to-peer suicide prevention programs and programs that train high school students to become peer mentors. These grants will be available to school districts, charter schools, contract alternative schools, and nonprofit organizations to fund initiatives for students in grades 9 through 12. Peer-to-peer suicide prevention programs, as defined by the bill, involve trained students acting as mentors to their peers, engaging in supportive conversations, identifying mental health crisis warning signs, and referring students to trusted adults when necessary, all under adult supervision. The training programs funded by these grants will provide research-based instruction on recognizing suicide risk, active listening, and how to help peers connect with adults. Grant recipients are encouraged to collaborate with other educational institutions, nonprofits, and community partners to develop and implement these programs.
