This bill authorizes the commissioner of health to award grants to fund peer-to-peer suicide prevention programs and programs that train high school students to become peer mentors. These programs, intended for students in grades 9 through 12, will involve trained students, supervised by adults, acting as mentors to other students, engaging in supportive conversations, identifying mental health crisis warning signs, and referring peers to trusted adults. The training programs will focus on recognizing suicide risk, active listening, and connecting peers with adults. Grant recipients, which can include school districts, charter schools, contract alternative schools, and nonprofit organizations, may collaborate with other entities to implement these initiatives.
