This bill establishes a fine arts teacher mentorship program, beginning with the 2026-27 school year, to support new teachers in music, art, and performing arts. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) will contract with a Wisconsin-based nonprofit organization, recognized as tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, to run this program. This program will offer resources, advice, and mentorship connections to these beginning teachers, including guidance in the classroom, materials, financial assistance for conferences, and connections with experienced mentors. A key provision requires the nonprofit organization to match the funding provided by the DPI, with the DPI able to consider in-kind contributions for this match. The nonprofit organization must also submit quarterly reports to the DPI detailing their compliance with program requirements and how program funds are spent. The bill also allows for the reimbursement of mentors for business travel expenses.
