This concurrent resolution urges state agencies that own or control land in West Maui, including the Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Department of Accounting and General Services, and Department of Land and Natural Resources, to take immediate action to reduce wildfire risk to Lahaina and surrounding communities. This includes aggressively managing and removing hazardous vegetation and combustible growth, establishing and maintaining defensible space (areas cleared of flammable materials around structures), creating fuel breaks (strips of land where vegetation is managed to slow or stop the spread of fire), and ensuring emergency access routes are clear and adequate. The resolution specifically calls for these measures on state lands adjacent to residential areas, schools, temporary housing for wildfire survivors, and evacuation corridors, referencing past wildfire events and the ongoing risk posed by unmanaged vegetation. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is also encouraged to use its authority to assess fire risk and coordinate efforts. Finally, these agencies are requested to report on their progress to the Legislature by December 31, 2026.
