This bill, titled the Servicemember Civilian Transition Support Act, mandates that the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness must appoint a senior official within the Department of Defense (DoD) within 90 days of the bill's enactment to manage and oversee all programs and activities related to the transition of members of the Armed Forces from active duty to civilian life or reserve status. This designated official, who must have extensive experience with veterans' services and knowledge of military-to-civilian transitions, will serve as the principal advisor and assistant to senior DoD leadership on transition policies, operations, and programs. Their responsibilities will include coordinating with other federal agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs, Labor, and Education to improve transition services, acting as the DoD's chief transition officer to ensure service members are well-prepared for civilian life or reserve components, overseeing the Military-Civilian Transition Office, and reviewing existing programs like the Transition Assistance Program and Skillbridge Program to propose improvements. The Secretary of Defense will also be required to brief congressional defense committees on the appointment and implementation of this new role.
