This Resolution expresses support for designating the second Friday of June as "National Service and Conservation Corps Day" to honor the nationwide network of more than 140 Service and Conservation Corps, which are federally funded programs inspired by the historic Civilian Conservation Corps from the Great Depression era that engage young adults and post-9/11 veterans in hands-on community service and environmental projects. These modern programs, usually operated by local governments or nonprofit organizations, provide participants aged 16 to 25 (and veterans up to age 35) with education, workforce training, living allowances, and valuable career skills while they work on critical local needs such as disaster response, conservation, recreation enhancement, and the preservation of public lands. In addition to celebrating the contributions of these Corpsmembers as the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, the resolution encourages Americans to recognize the value of national service and calls for the continued support and expansion of these programs under the National and Community Service Act.
