This bill, also known as the "RE-COVER PII Act," amends the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2017, to extend and enhance identity protection coverage for individuals whose personally identifiable information (PII), which refers to any data that can be used to identify a specific person, was compromised in federal agency data breaches. Specifically, it changes the availability of this coverage from a limited period to the remainder of the affected individual's life and ensures it includes at least $5,000,000 in identity theft insurance. Furthermore, the bill allows federal agencies, starting in fiscal year 2026 and beyond, to use their appropriated funds to reimburse their employees or contractors' employees for up to 100% of the costs of "privacy-enhancing services," which are defined as technological solutions that reduce privacy risks by minimizing or removing personal information, provided appropriate documentation is submitted.
