This bill updates Virginia law regarding the extra compensation that local school boards can choose to give to their leadership roles, specifically the chairman and vice-chairman, who lead the board and run its meetings. Under current law, school boards are only allowed to pay their chairman a flat additional salary of up to $2,000 per year and do not have explicit authorization to pay their vice-chairman any extra amount. The legislation changes this by allowing school boards to pay the chairman an increased extra annual salary of up to 30 percent of their base salary or $3,500, whichever is greater, and a newly established extra annual salary for the vice-chairman of up to 15 percent of their base salary or $1,750, whichever is greater. To enact these pay increases, the school board (if elected) or the local governing body of the county, city, or town (if the school board is appointed) must pass a formal resolution approving the change.
