This bill, the Transit System Flexibility Protection Act of 2011, allows the Secretary of Transportation to provide grants for the operating costs of equipment and facilities used in public transportation systems, with different funding percentages based on the size of the transit system. Specifically, systems operating 75 or fewer buses during peak hours in an urbanized area with at least 200,000 people can receive grants covering up to 50 percent of these costs, while systems operating between 76 and 100 buses in such areas can receive grants covering up to 25 percent.
