This Resolution recognizes the 50th anniversary of the sinking of the U.S.S. Thresher (SSN 593), a submarine that tragically sank on April 10, 1963, with all 129 crew members, including sailors and civilians, aboard. The resolution acknowledges that this loss led to the establishment of the Submarine Safety and Quality Assurance program, known as SUBSAFE, which is a comprehensive military safety program credited with ensuring the safety of U.S. submarines and their crews ever since, with no SUBSAFE-certified submarine lost at sea. It also notes that the incident spurred the development of ocean engineering curricula in higher education, contributing to U.S. preeminence in submarine warfare, and expresses profound sorrow for the loss of the U.S.S. Thresher and its crew, honoring their sacrifice and the dedication of all submariners.
