This bill establishes the Indiana Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, which supplements the protections already provided to servicemembers under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA), a law designed to protect individuals in military service from certain civil liabilities. Key provisions include ensuring that penalties for late personal property tax returns do not apply to individuals covered by the federal SCRA or the new Indiana act, and requiring the Indiana National Guard to provide its members with a list of their rights under both state and federal SCRA. The bill also clarifies that members of the Indiana National Guard called to state active duty for more than thirty consecutive days are subject to the federal SCRA, and allows servicemembers to terminate contracts for telecommunication, internet, television, athletic club, or satellite radio services if they receive orders to relocate for at least ninety days to a location that doesn't support the contract, without incurring early termination fees. Furthermore, the bill allows dependents of servicemembers to have the same rights as servicemembers under certain parts of the federal SCRA, and empowers the Attorney General to take legal action against those who knowingly violate the Indiana SCRA, including seeking injunctions, monetary payments, and civil penalties.
