This bill amends Chapter 71 of the Massachusetts General Laws to add a new section that clarifies rules around student data privacy. Specifically, it states that any entity providing account-based access to a website or online service for an educational institution, which has marketed and designed that service for the institution, and knows it collects student data, cannot use that service to sell student data or process it for advertising purposes. However, these online service providers are permitted to process student data to provide, improve, develop, or maintain the integrity of their online services. An "educational institution" is defined within this section to include primary or secondary schools, school districts, or boards of cooperative educational services.
