This bill amends Section 68 of Chapter 71 of the General Laws, which deals with school transportation, by changing how fees for student transportation are handled. Specifically, it allows a school committee, which is the governing body of a school district, to charge fees to students who are transported by the school, up to the amount the district spends on that transportation. However, there are important exceptions: students whose transportation is legally mandated by any law, or those who qualify for free or reduced-price lunches under the federal school lunch program, will not have to pay these fees. Additionally, school committees have the discretion to waive fees for families based on their income level or offer discounts for families with multiple children using the transportation service, and they cannot charge fees based on how far a student lives from the school.
