This bill establishes the position of Poet Laureate for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, an honorary role intended to promote poetry appreciation among residents, particularly children. Every two years, the Governor will appoint a Poet Laureate from a list of three nominees submitted by a special nominating committee. This committee will consist of the Speaker of the House, the Senate President, and three members appointed by the Governor, two of whom must be from the Massachusetts Cultural Council's board. The committee will advertise for nominations, and nominees must be Massachusetts residents who demonstrate significant poetic accomplishments. The Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term and will not receive any salary or be considered a state official or employee.
