This bill proposes to amend Chapter 84 of the General Laws by adding a new section, Section 2A, titled "Bridge Maintenance Transparency and Accountability." This new section mandates that whenever a bridge is painted or repainted, the color of the paint used will signify the year the work was completed, and this year, in numbers at least 7 inches tall, will also be painted on the sides, top, and underside of the bridge. Specific color codes are established for the bridge paint and the year markings based on the last digit of the completion year, for example, bridges painted in years ending in "0" will use black paint for the bridge and white for the year. However, this requirement will not apply to the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge in Boston and the Longfellow Bridge in Boston and Cambridge, and the Governor will have the authority to grant additional exemptions.
