This bill allows for the creation of distinctive registration plates for firefighters in Massachusetts, which will feature a Maltese cross to signify their profession. These special plates will be available to active firefighters, retired firefighters in good standing, and immediate family members of firefighters who died in the line of duty. To obtain these plates, applicants must provide certification from their fire department chief to the registrar, who is the state official responsible for vehicle registration. There will be an additional $20 fee for these plates, on top of the regular registration fee, with the money collected being split equally between the Massachusetts Firefighters Academy Trust Fund and the Massachusetts Fallen Firefighter Memorial Trust Fund. Furthermore, in a state of emergency, active firefighters driving vehicles with these distinctive plates will be permitted to travel on state highways, even if there are general driving restrictions in place, as long as they are performing their official duties.
