This bill allows certain public safety officers in Massachusetts to purchase creditable service for retirement purposes for previous periods of service as a public safety officer in another state or with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), provided they pay into their current retirement system an amount equivalent to what would have been deducted from their salary for that service, plus interest. This provision is limited to a maximum of five years of prior service and does not apply to service for which the officer already receives or is entitled to a retirement allowance from another entity. The bill also clarifies that if the purchased out-of-state or MBTA service exceeds the officer's Massachusetts service, credit will only be granted for the most recent portion of the out-of-state or MBTA service that matches their Massachusetts service, with any overpayment refunded. This change will take effect for a city, town, county, or other retirement system upon its acceptance by that system.
