This bill proposes to amend existing law regarding ordinary disability retirements for public service employees by adding a new provision that, upon acceptance by a retirement system, guarantees that a member retired for ordinary disability will receive a monthly payment no less than what a disabled individual with the same marital status and living situation would receive under the state's Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Acceptance of this new provision requires a majority vote of the retirement system's board, followed by approval from the relevant "legislative body," which is defined differently depending on the type of governmental entity (e.g., city council for a city, board of selectmen for a town). The state teachers' and state employees' retirement systems are automatically considered to have accepted this provision.
