Importantly, if a student with special needs requires placement in a private day or residential school, the financial responsibility for that student will remain with the school district where the student lives, not the charter school. The bill also outlines a process for charter schools to involve the resident school district's special education department in individual education plan (IEP) team meetings when a student may need such specialized placement, allowing the district to present in-district program options. Even if a student is placed in a private school, the charter school must reserve a seat for them, but the resident district will not contribute to the tuition for that private placement.
