This bill, concerning probation violations, amends Section 3 of Chapter 279 of the General Laws to provide courts with more options when a defendant violates a condition of probation. Instead of automatically reinstating the full suspended sentence, as was previously the case, the court can now choose to continue the defendant on probation, potentially with extended terms or modified conditions. Alternatively, the court can revoke the probation and commit the defendant to an intermediate sanctions program, which are alternative punishments to incarceration, or impose some or all of the original suspended sentence.
