This bill amends existing Massachusetts law to broaden the definition of "transmitted communication" to encompass a wider range of modern communication methods, including those using cellular telephones and smartphones, while excluding tone-only paging devices, tracking devices, and electronic funds transfer information. Additionally, it expands the definition of "designated offense" to include serious crimes such as homicide, crimes involving the use or threat of force, controlled substance violations, and firearms offenses, regardless of whether they are connected to organized crime, and also covers being an accessory, conspiracy, or attempt to commit these offenses. These changes are intended to assist in the investigation of serious crimes by updating the legal definitions to reflect current technological and criminal landscapes.
