This bill mandates that various health insurance plans and contracts in New Jersey, including those offered by hospital service corporations, medical service corporations, health service corporations, individual and group health insurance policies, health benefits plans for individuals and small employers, and health maintenance organizations (HMOs), must provide coverage for depression screenings for patients under 18 years old. This coverage, which must be at the same level as for other conditions, specifically includes screenings performed by a pediatrician using a nationally recognized tool. The bill also requires the State Health Benefits Commission and the School Employees' Health Benefits Commission to ensure their purchased contracts include this coverage. These provisions will apply to new or renewed policies and contracts on or after 180 days following the bill's enactment.
