This bill allows individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to have the international symbol for deafness displayed on their driver's license or identification card, with the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles determining what constitutes sufficient proof of hearing impairment. There are associated fees for adding the symbol, either a $1 fee when obtaining a new card or license, or a $2 fee for a replacement card or license if no other transaction is being conducted, with these fees going into the Highway Safety Operating Trust Fund. The changes will take effect once new designs for driver's licenses and identification cards are implemented by the department, and the bill itself becomes effective on July 1, 2016.
