This bill directs the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to revise its regulations concerning on-site sewerage treatment and disposal systems at campgrounds within one year of the bill's passage. The goal of these revisions is to increase access to and encourage the growth of camping, while still safeguarding public health, safety, and the environment. Specifically, the DEP must update regulations related to septic flow (the amount of wastewater a system can handle), volume discharge (how much wastewater is released), greywater (wastewater from sinks, showers, and laundry), land size requirements for systems, and approved chemical additives. These changes should better reflect the conditions of seasonal campground use without unnecessarily restricting user access or expansion of facilities. The DEP is also required to consult with established camping organizations, such as the Massachusetts Association of Campground Owners and the Massachusetts Camping Association, during this regulatory amendment process.
