This bill amends the existing "move over law" in Massachusetts, which requires drivers to exercise caution around certain vehicles stopped on the side of the road. Specifically, it expands the definition of vehicles covered by this law to include "utility vehicles" (those used for emergency repairs to communications, electricity, or gas services) and "recovery vehicles" (tow trucks assisting disabled vehicles), in addition to the previously covered "emergency response vehicles" (like police cars and ambulances) and "highway maintenance vehicles." When approaching any of these stationary vehicles displaying flashing lights, drivers are now required to either change lanes to one further away if it's safe and practicable on a highway with at least four lanes, or if changing lanes is not possible, to slow down to a reasonable and safe speed for the road conditions. Violating this updated law will result in a fine of up to $100.
