This bill amends the existing "move over law" to enhance the safety of emergency responders and other essential workers on the road. It clarifies that drivers must exercise due caution and reduce their speed when approaching stationary vehicles displaying flashing lights, including emergency response vehicles (like fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances), highway maintenance vehicles, utility vehicles (used for restoring electric or gas service), and recovery vehicles (used for towing disabled vehicles). If it is safe and practical to do so on a highway with at least four lanes, drivers are required to change lanes to avoid the stationary vehicle. If changing lanes is not feasible, drivers must still proceed with extreme caution and at a reduced, safe speed. Violating these provisions will result in a fine of up to $100.
