This bill amends Chapter 175 of the General Laws to add a new section 228 regulating pet insurance policies marketed, issued, amended, renewed, or delivered to Massachusetts residents. The key provisions require pet insurers to disclose certain information to consumers, such as exclusions for preexisting conditions, hereditary disorders, congenital anomalies, and chronic conditions, as well as limits on coverage through waiting periods, deductibles, and annual/lifetime limits. Insurers are also required to clearly disclose their claim payment formulas and to provide consumers with a 30-day free look period to review and cancel their policy. The bill also gives the Commissioner of Insurance authority to impose civil penalties for violations of up to $10,000 per violation.
