This bill aims to provide additional consumer protections in the repair of damaged motor vehicles. It requires insurers or repairers to clearly identify in their written estimates any major generic crash parts (i.e., non-original manufacturer parts) that will be used for repairs. The bill also mandates a notification to be attached to the estimate, informing the consumer that the estimate is based on the use of manufacturer or generic crash parts, and that the generic parts are warranted by the insurer and manufacturer/distributor. Additionally, the repairer must identify the manufacturer or supplier of any non-original manufacturer crash parts used in the actual repairs on the customer's repair order or certification form. Finally, the bill requires all crash parts manufactured after January 1, 2010 to carry permanent identification to indicate the manufacturer, to the extent possible after installation.
