This bill amends a section of Massachusetts law regarding school transportation. The key provisions are: 1) If a student's residence is more than 1/2 mile from their assigned school, there are no sidewalks, and the nearest bus stop is more than 1/4 mile away, and the school committee declines to provide transportation, the state education department can require the town to provide transportation for students in grades K-12 for the full distance. 2) If a student's residence is more than 3 miles from their assigned school, but less than 3 miles from a comparable school in an adjoining town, and the school committee declines to pay tuition and transportation to the nearer school, the state education department can require the town to pay tuition and provide transportation to the nearer school for students in grades K-12.
