Bill Summary
Relative to access to state funded counsel during sex offender classification hearings. The Judiciary.
AI Summary
This bill removes the requirement for the state to provide free legal counsel to sex offenders during their classification hearings. Currently, sex offenders who are deemed indigent, based on the standards set forth in Chapter 211D, are entitled to have the state appoint a lawyer to represent them in these classification proceedings. This bill would eliminate that requirement, though sex offenders would still have the right to retain their own private counsel if they choose to do so.
