Bill Summary

Gold Star Family Support and Installation Access Act of 2017

AI Summary

This bill, the Gold Star Family Support and Installation Access Act of 2017, has several key provisions: 1. It requires the Secretary of the military to provide a standardized "Gold Star Installation Access Card" to the surviving spouse and dependent children of a deceased member of the armed forces to enable them to access military installations for memorial events, visiting gravesites, and accessing benefits they are entitled to. 2. It allows the Secretary to also provide the Gold Star Installation Access Card to other next of kin of the deceased service member, at the Secretary's discretion. 3. It ensures the Gold Star Installation Access Card issued by one military service is accepted for access to installations of other services. 4. It amends current law to ensure that a remarried surviving spouse with dependent children of the deceased service member remains eligible to use commissary stores and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) retail facilities, even after remarriage. The bill aims to provide greater support and access for Gold Star families, who have lost a loved one serving in the armed forces, and ensure they can continue to access military benefits and facilities, even if the surviving spouse remarries.
