As of July 31, LegiNation — the company behind BillTrack50 — has been acquired by Nimonik, a Montreal-based regulatory compliance software company. I’d like to share my thoughts and motivations and explain what happens next.
Why Nimonik
Nimonik has been a customer of BillTrack50 for more than ten years. We know them and they know us. They respect the value of our software and the database behind it. We like the way they conduct themselves and their business.
Nimonik has spent years working on regulatory requirements and standards around the world, the same way we've spent years improving access to legislative data. Our distinct but related missions are why this merger made sense. We weren't looking for a buyer. But given the opportunity to enhance and expand what BillTrack50 is able to do, we were excited to join with this partner we already trusted.
It also mattered to us that Nimonik is a company built the way ours is: founder-run, focused on a specialist market, and staffed by people who care and share our commitment to easy access to public information.
What this means for you, day to day: Not too much
- BillTrack50 stays BillTrack50. Same platform, same name, same login, same experience.
- I will continue as president of LegiNation, and the entire team is staying too.
- Your subscription terms and renewal date are unchanged. (Yes, pricing changes are coming, explained below.)
- Your data stays where it is, on our US-based infrastructure.
- LegiNation continues to operate as its own business entity, so payments and contracts also remain the same.
If you were bracing for a migration email, a rebrand, or a new account manager introducing themselves, none of that is coming. The intention is that if we hadn't told you, you wouldn't have really noticed.
What does change: What we're able to build next
Nimonik brings a team of 55+ specialists across Canada, the US, France, China, and UAE, along with deep expertise in regulatory and standards data. This affords us some cool possibilities.
Three things in particular:
The AI-driven data work moves faster. We've been developing a set of AI-assisted approaches to legislative data like plain-language summaries, better classification, and now semantic search, but progress hasn't been as quick as we would all like. Now we'll have more resources and more freedom to build exciting new tools and products.
A deeper bench for support. One of the things customers tell us they value most about BillTrack50 is our above and beyond customer service. That doesn't change. What changes is that we can keep that standard as we grow, rather than watching service degrade as we get bigger. Growth is usually where small companies quietly get worse at the thing that made people choose them; we'd like to avoid that particular tradition.
New products, including potential international data. Of course I can't wait to get my hands on some of the amazing data and processes Nimonik has in place. Nimonik's footprint spans multiple continents, and there are data products we've wanted to build for years that suddenly look reachable. We'll keep you in the loop as we figure out what we're going to jump into first.
Pricing: what's changing, and when
OK, now the nitty gritty.
A 5% annual increase on all subscriptions. Existing customers will see the new pricing on renewals starting January 1, 2027. If you've already built your 2027 budget and can't absorb an increase, you have two options: renew before January 1, or reach out to us and we'll figure something out.
A new "power user" tier. This will apply to customers with more than 50 users, more than 100 total bill and regulation sheets, or more than 100,000 API calls per month. If that describes your account, we'll be in touch directly. If it doesn't, this doesn't affect you. No one will see a change before their next renewal, and we'll walk through it with you first and give you options.
Charges for certain consulting requests. We've historically absorbed a lot of custom work, and as the volume has grown that's no longer sustainable to do for free. We'll continue to offer custom and bespoke development — we think it's one of the things that sets us apart — but some of it will now incur a charge. We will let you know exactly what to expect if you make a request we will need to charge for; there won't be any surprise bills.
Join us on September 10
I'm hosting a webinar on September 10 at 12:00 Eastern to walk through what's ahead and answer questions — about the acquisition, the roadmap, pricing, or anything else on your mind. Nimonik's CEO, Jonathan Brun, will be on hand to explain things from his point of view and address any questions or concerns you may have.
If you'd rather talk one-on-one, that works too. Email us and we'll set up a call. Some conversations are better had in private, especially if you have specific concerns about your account.
Thank you
BillTrack50 exists because a lot of people — advocacy organizations, associations, government affairs teams, consultants, researchers, and more than a few curious citizens — decided to trust a small company with work that matters to them. I never take that for granted.
The whole team is still here, still doing the same work, with more behind us than before. We think you'll like where this goes.
