This Concurrent Resolution requests the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Commission on Water Resource Management to conduct a study on the availability of both drinkable (potable) and non-drinkable (non-potable) water in Maui County to see if there is enough water to build more affordable housing. The study will examine natural and man-made water sources, existing water systems, how much water is currently used and how much might be needed in the future, and generally assess water resources that could support new homes. The Commission is also encouraged to get input from the community and relevant groups, and to report its findings and any suggestions for new laws to the State Legislature by early 2023. This action is being taken because of a significant housing shortage, particularly for low and moderate-income residents, and concerns about water supply, especially in light of recent drought conditions and water shortage declarations on Maui.
