This bill allows the governing body of a municipality or independent school district to authorize the use of preferential voting for nonpartisan elections of local officers. Preferential voting allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference, and if no candidate receives a majority of first-choice votes, the votes of the candidate with the fewest votes are reassigned to the voters' next preferred candidates until one candidate has a majority. The bill also eliminates the need for primary elections and runoff elections for these types of local nonpartisan offices.
