This Resolution requests the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) to report on how money from the Works of Art Special Fund has been spent specifically on the curation and preservation of Native Hawaiian art. The SFCA is asked to detail the total amount spent on Native Hawaiian art, how many pieces were acquired, what percentage of all art collected by the fund is Native Hawaiian art, the cost per Native Hawaiian art piece, and what percentage of the total cost of all collected art is attributed to Native Hawaiian art. This report is to be submitted to the Legislature before the start of the 2023 legislative session, and a certified copy will be sent to the SFCA's Executive Director. The resolution highlights concerns that current SFCA strategic priorities and fund usage may not adequately support Native Hawaiian culture, particularly traditional practices like oral and dance performances, and protect against misappropriation.
