This bill amends Section 89 of Chapter 71 of the General Laws to require "local approval" for the funding of commonwealth charter school applications. Local approval is defined as an action taken by a locally elected body, such as an elected school committee, town meeting, or city council and mayor, to authorize local funds being allocated for a charter school. The bill states that only commonwealth charter school applications that have received the local approval of every town or school district expected to enroll students shall be funded through Chapter 70 or other local funds, and applications without such local approval shall be funded exclusively by the board. The bill applies only to commonwealth charter school applications submitted after the effective date of the act.
