This bill amends the existing Minnesota law (Section 12.31, subdivision 2) to require legislative approval for extending a peacetime emergency declaration beyond 30 days. Currently, the governor can declare a peacetime emergency and extend it for up to 30 days without legislative approval. This bill would allow the governor to extend the emergency declaration for up to 30 days, but beyond that, the legislature must approve the extension by a majority vote of each house. If the legislature is not in session when the governor needs to extend the emergency beyond 30 days, the governor must immediately call the legislature into session.
