This bill amends the New York General Business Law to prohibit retail establishments, including food-service establishments, from refusing to accept payment in cash. The bill defines "food-service establishment" as an establishment that sells food or beverages for consumption on or off the premises, and "retail establishment" as an establishment that sells consumer commodities or provides services to consumers. The bill imposes a civil penalty of up to $250 for the first violation and up to $500 for each subsequent violation. The New York Department of Labor is authorized to promulgate rules to implement and enforce this new law, which will take effect 120 days after it becomes law.
