This bill amends the Education Law to allow students enrolled in approved postsecondary education experience or transition programs to receive financial assistance from the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). The bill defines "students with intellectual disabilities" as those with an impairment of general intellectual functioning or adaptive behavior that constitutes a substantial handicap to their ability to function normally in society. The approved programs must serve these students, provide individual supports and services for their academic and social inclusion, focus on academic enrichment, socialization, independent living skills, and integrated work experiences, and be federally approved comprehensive transition and postsecondary programs. This will enable students with intellectual disabilities to access the same TAP awards as those enrolled in degree-granting institutions.
