This bill establishes the Sustainable Food Systems Working Group within the Department of Agriculture. The working group is tasked with developing an interagency food systems plan that aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to create a more sustainable and resilient local food economy in Hawaii. The plan must address food as a human right, social equity, food system resilience, agriculture and food system sustainability, food in a circular economy, sustainable education and workforce development, and good food governance. The working group must submit the plan and any implementation recommendations, including proposed legislation, to the legislature by 2025. The bill also appropriates funds to establish the working group and develop the plan, as well as for an unspecified number of sustainability specialist positions at the Department of Agriculture.
